Project description

The S61 expressway forms part of the international E67 route, known as Via Baltica, which is intended to connect the Baltic States with Central Europe. The Suwałki–Budzisko section is the border section of the Polish part of Via Baltica, and its scope was additionally expanded to include infrastructure facilities supporting cross-border traffic.

Key design considerations

Challenges that required precise project coordination.

The Hilly Masuria region is characterised by highly variable terrain and similarly diverse geological conditions. One of the main technical challenges was designing cost-effective ground improvement solutions, particularly in areas containing numerous peat bogs, pockets of weak soils and high groundwater levels.

Considerable design effort was also required to optimise the road layout serving the border crossing. In addition to the Budzisko Service Area, the scheme included a buffer parking facility equipped with a vehicle preselection system. The experience gained on this project was subsequently applied to other expressway contracts. Our portfolio now includes a total of four cross-border road sections.
