Project description

The S19 expressway forms part of Via Carpatia, an international road corridor approximately 3,000 km long, connecting Northern Europe with Southern and Eastern Europe. In Poland, the route will cover approximately 700 km, running along the country’s eastern border as part of the S61 and S19 expressways.

The Sokółka–Kuźnica section is located close to the national border. Its scope was additionally extended to include infrastructure facilities supporting border traffic operations.

Key design considerations

Challenges that required precise project coordination.

The section provides access to the existing border crossing in Kuźnica. For this reason, the road classification was lowered along its final section to adapt the road geometry to local conditions.

The Wojnowice Motorway Service Area was designed in front of the border crossing. It includes a parking area for heavy goods vehicles operating as part of a vehicle preselection system.

The project was particularly demanding in terms of selecting appropriate reinforcement solutions for the pavement structure and road embankment due to the varying ground conditions identified during construction.

Another challenge involved designing solutions that would enable the optimal management of earthworks, balancing soils with suitable embankment properties against locally high groundwater levels.
