Project description

The S1 expressway is a key transport route in southern Poland, with a planned total length of approximately 135 km. It runs from the junction with the A1 motorway in Pyrzowice, near Katowice Airport, to the Slovak border in Zwardoń. The route forms an important international transport corridor connecting the Baltic Sea region with Southern Europe.

Key design considerations

Challenges that required precise project coordination.

The project was particularly demanding due to the need to accommodate the design parameters of the new expressway within the existing road corridor of the Eastern Bypass of the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Area, which had originally been built to a lower road classification.

Another major challenge involved the extensive reconstruction of existing underground infrastructure, including large-diameter water pipelines supplying the Katowice Steelworks. Due to the plant’s operational requirements, it was necessary to design a reconstruction method that would allow the pipeline switchover to be completed within the short time window specified by the facility.
