Project description

The A4 motorway forms part of the international E40 transport network and provides one of Poland’s key east–west connections. With a total length of more than 670 km, it is the longest motorway in the country.

In addition to serving international transit traffic, the Dębica–Rzeszów section is an important driver of economic growth in southern Poland. It has supported the development of modern Economic Activity Zones and Special Economic Zones, which in recent years have attracted a growing number of investors from the advanced technology and aerospace sectors.

Key design considerations

Challenges that required precise project coordination.

This important section of the A4 motorway runs through predominantly flat terrain. Due to the presence of groundwater intakes, the environmental decision required the design of a closed motorway drainage system incorporating underground retention tanks and pumping stations. The system was designed to discharge stormwater beyond the protection zones of underground drinking water reservoirs. The protected section extended for 3 km near Dębica and as much as 10 km near Rzeszów.

The environmental requirements also necessitated the design of numerous culverts for amphibians and small animals, which in turn required the road level to be raised. As a result, this contract involved a record volume of embankment works.
