Project description

The Świerklany–Gorzyczki section forms the southern part of the A1 motorway, leading to the Czech border and connecting with the Czech D1 motorway. The route is part of the international E75 corridor, linking Northern and Southern Europe.

The completion of this project was crucial to finalising an important transport network in southern Poland and improving transit connections between Upper Silesia, the Czech Republic and destinations further across Europe.

Key design considerations

Challenges that required precise project coordination.

The motorway runs through highly undulating terrain intersected by numerous rivers and streams with valleys of varying widths. The road corridor was constructed on ground with complex geological conditions, much of it characterised by low bearing capacity and partly affected by active mining operations, which required the use of appropriate protective structures.

The design had to account for the progressive settlement of the road and the surrounding land caused by ongoing mining activity. The proposed solutions therefore had to ensure the long-term reliability of all designed structures and installations throughout their entire service life.

A key strength of the project is the way the route has been harmoniously integrated into the surrounding landscape through the careful proportioning and alignment of vertical and horizontal curves. From the road user’s perspective, this provides smooth and safe route guidance while minimising the road’s impact on the immediate surroundings and local residents.
